거리를 걷고 있노라니....늙어빠진 거지 하나가

나의 발길을 멈추게 한다.


눈물어린 충혈된 눈, 파리한 입술, 다 헤진 누더기 옷,

더러운 상처.....오오, 가난은 어쩌면 이다지도 처참히

이 불행한 인간을 갉아먹는 것일까!


그는 빨갛게 부푼 더러운 손을 나에게 내밀었다.

그는 신음하듯 중얼거리듯 동냥을 청한다.


나는 호주머니란 호주머니는 모조리 뒤지기 시작했다.

지갑도 없다. 시계도 없다, 손수건마저 없다.

나는 아무 것도 가진 것이 없었다.


그러나 거지는 기다리고 있다. 나에게 내민 그 손은

힘없이 흔들리며 떨리고 있다.


당황한 나머지 어쩔 줄을 몰라, 나는 힘없이 떨고 있는

그 더러운 손을 덥석 움켜 잡았다.

"용서하시오, 형제, 아무 것도 가진게 없구려"


거지는 충혈된 두 눈으로 물끄러미 나를 바라보았다.

그의 파리한 두 입술에 가느다란 미소가 스쳤다.

그리고 그는 자기대로 나의 싸늘한 손가락을 꼭 잡아주었다.


"괜찮습니다, 형제여" 하고 속삭였다.

"그것만으로도 고맙습니다. 그것도 역시 적선이니까요"

나는 깨달았다. 나도 이 거지에게서 적선을 받았다는 것을...

This was one of the photos that has changed a nation. I can't
elaborate how, why and when it happened but it already has.

This was taken in 2008 when I spotted these two beggar kids
dozing of on the steps of a overhead bridge.

Though exhausted, the older kid used his last strength to
shelter his little brother from people who approached them.

A nation may be weaken by many trials and tribulation.
It may has a bad name in the past due to corrupted
leadership and jealous people who were not united
towards common goals.

But this is about to change... I have faith in God choosing
the right leader. He is alone protecting his country and take
the responsibility of past wrongs... he will make it right if
citizens exercise faith and tolerance.

He is just like the older boy here protecting his brother
from all dangers.
